About Us

History

Dr Annabel Joyce-Jenkins, from the UK, worked as a community care doctor in the Ngara district in Western Tanzania from 1996 to 1999.  Following her tragic death from leukaemia in 1999, her Tanzanian colleagues decided  to both meet the needs of the local people and honour her work, by building a Health Centre in Mugoma

Facts and Figures

The proposed health facility will serve approximately 40,000 people living within 20 kilometers of the site.

It is about 40 kilometers away from the existing District Hospital at Murgwanza.

The Needs

The local people are desperately poor and cannot afford to travel to hospital to receive urgent care. Sick children, the disabled and pregnant women are particularly at risk. Some die at home or on their way to hospital. Local dispensaries are inadequate to treat anything other than minor conditions. A substantial local facility is required with the capacity to admit critical cases.

The Trust

The decision was taken to apply for charitable status and the Mugoma Trust  was formed in 2014, with the primary object of working with local people to fund the construction and running of the Health Centre.  Some £75,000 has been raised through fundraising events, one-off and regular donations. With this the foundations have been laid and the walls and roof are up. Door and windows and plastering have also been completed.

Our Vision

That the people of Mugoma will have locally based quality health care saving lives and preventing illness.

The Future

We urgently need to get the health centre up and running. Our Tanzanian colleagues have pledged materials and labour but will need our support. We are currently fundraising for plumbing, electrics and staff accommodation
